Now as many of you readers may know, blogging about films requires me to often sit through both films & their previews while at the theater. Though I do consider myself a fairly strong skeptic, from time to time I do find myself being drawn in by a films trailer. Such is the case with the film “Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.”
The film stars comedic actor Michael Cera and is based on the comic series of the same name written by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The series centers around a band’s base guitarists named Scott Pilgrim who meets his perfect women in Ramona Flowers (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead). The romance seems a match made in hipster heaven until Flowers reveals that her love life is dictated by her seven evil super powered exes and that Scott must defeat them in order for the two to truly be together.
This film’s premise and trailer immediately drew me in because it instantly put me in mind of one of my favorite video games, “No More Heroes.” The idea of having a male lead fight off a league of powerful eccentrics in order to accomplish a goal no one else would go though as much trouble to obtain is a theme that when done properly can prove to be both funny and action packed.
The film's visuals also share much in common with No More Heroes in it that they both share a heavy influence from Japanese anime. Subtle touches in the film such as Flowers’ hair style, The fight choreography, and the on screen written sound effects make this film seem both highly stylized and entertaining right off the bat.
All in all I’m looking forward to checking this one out. After my most recent rant about my distaste for American comic series, it’ll be interesting to see an American take on some Japanese themes.
